Place your bike on the front of the bus and go!

The basics: how to ride

Getting around the Columbus area is easy when you ride COTA – all 365 days of the year! But before you board, there are a few things to keep in mind. The more you know about COTA, the more you'll be able to take advantage of our services.

Step by step

1. Plan your Trip. You can make a custom itinerary in seconds using either COTA’s Trip Planner or Google Transit.

2. Locate a COTA Bus Stop. To find the one nearest you, click here. Bus stops are marked with route numbers of the buses that serve the location.

3. Arrive Early. Get to the bus stop at least five minutes early and wait for the next bus.

4. Double Check. Before boarding the bus, check the information in the lighted sign above the windshield. This will have the route numbers, names and destinations scrolling across the sign.

5. Board the Bus.

6. Show your BuckID to the Operator.

7. Take a Seat. Enjoy the ride!

8. Relax. COTA will take care of the driving. When your stop is approaching, pull the stop cord across the windows or press the yellow strip. If you are not sure where the stop is for your destination, ask the bus operator or check the route timetable.

9. Exit. Walk to the back door when the bus comes to a complete stop and watch your step when stepping off bus.

* If you have a disability, all COTA buses are accessible for mobility devices – including wheelchairs and three-wheeled scooters. Bus operators are trained and ready to help secure your mobility device. If you have difficulty climbing stairs, let the bus operator know because all COTA buses have a “kneeling function” that lowers the front of the bus and makes boarding easier.
